MASHANTUCKET, Conn. Wednesday night, Peter Manfredo, Jr. had his second fight since his loss to Joe Calzaghe in April. He may need a little more time off before his next fight, but his 10-round unanimous decision over David Banks assured the Providence, R.I. native that his next fight will still be another step back towards a possible title shot.
Judges Don O'Neill, Glenn Feldman and George Smith scored the fight 97-93 for Manfredo (28-4, 13 KOs). Banks, who defeated Elvin Ayala in his last two outings, dropped to 14-2-1 (2 KOs).
“I’ve been in the gym since January, training for Calzaghe," said Manfredo, who was stopped in three rounds by Calzaghe on April 7 and stopped Ted Muller in nine rounds on May 12. "I need a break."
Manfredo's left eye was closed by the seventh round, with Banks frequently landing his right hand. Manfredo also did some good work with his right, landing it after feinting with his left hand.
After Banks controlled the first round, Manfredo began to let his hands go and by the middle rounds, his body shots wore down Banks slightly. Banks regained some momentum in the seventh, picking up the pace and landing more right hands while Manfredo slowed down a little.
"He just threw some real quick punches," said Banks. "I definitely landed the stronger shots. Look at his face. Next time, I just need to get busier and throw more combinations and stop pot-shotting."
Manfredo's next fight could be against either Allan Green or Jeff Lacy, who was in attendance at the Fox Theater at Foxwoods Resort Casino.
"I just want to get back to being the number one contender," said Manfredo. "I'll fight whoever I have to fight to get there."
Light welterweight Jamie Clampitt avenged her 2004 loss to Jane Couch with a 10-round unanimous decision over Couch. The scores were 98-92 (twice) and 100-90.
Clampitt, whose trainer, Tiny Ricci, died the week of her last fight with Couch, fought with more energy than she had in the first fight. She stayed in front of Couch for the duration of the fight, landing several solid body shots, but caught more than a few right hands that left her left eye swollen. Clampitt is now 18-4-1 (7 KO s); Couch is 28-10 (9 KO s).
Jarrod Tillinghast of Cranston, R.I. knocked out Santiago Hillario of Oaxaca, Mexico in the first round of a four-round light heavyweight bout. After landing several punches to the face that Hillario reacted to by turning his back, Tillinghast dropped him with a left hook and the fight was over at 1:33. Tillinghast is 9-0 (4 KO s); Hillario dropped to 3-12 (3 KOs).
Junior middleweight Damon Antoine of Akron, Ohio won a four-round majority decision over Gerry Grealish of Galway, Ireland. The scores were 39-37, 40-36 and 38-38. Antoine is now 6-11-1 (3 KO s). Grealish is 6-1 (4 KO s).
Addy Irzarry of Hartford stopped Domesha Allen of Wilson, N.C. 16 seconds into the first round of a scheduled four-round women's junior welterweight bout. After Irzarry landed one combination to the head and Allen reacted liked her head was being held under water, Steve Smoger stopped the fight. Irzarry is 2-1 (2 KO s); Allen is 0-3.
Cruiserweight Aaron Williams of Las Vegas stopped Deleon Tinsley of Orlando at 1:18 of the second round in a scheduled six-round bout. Williams is now 13-0-1 (9 KO s); Tinsley is 7-2-1 (5 K Os).
Henry Lundy of Philadelphia stopped Devarise Crayton of Orlando in the second round of a four-round junior welterweight fight. Lundy is now 6-0 (5 K Os); Crayton is 4-3.
Super middleweight Angel Camacho, Jr. of Johnston, R.I. won a four-round unanimous decision over John Terry of Virginia Beach, Va. The scores were 39-36 (twice) and 4036. Camacho is 7-0 (4 KO s); Terry is 2-6 (1 KO).
